PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Originally founded as the aerial warfare branch of the United States Army , the Air Force was decIared a separate autonomous branch of the armed services on 18 September 1947. In recognition of its 70 th birthday and New York City’s  historic role in helping to support its creation , and  aviation in general , the IRON GATE Chapter will be dedicating its regularly scheduled luncheon programs in celebration of this momentous event . Additionally we will  be participating in support of related salutes throughout 2017. Our political and financial leadership in Manhattan contributed , as well as any other city in the U.S., to this  realization. Appreciating the importance of keeping open lines of communication with this influential community and reaching out to the general public by advantageous utilization of  New York’s media assets our IRON GATE Chapter was conceived at the urging of then USAF Chief of Staff, the legendary  Curtis LeMay . His friend, Air Force Reserve Colonel Maxwell “ Mac “ Kriendler , accordingly, formed our IRON GATE Chapter to be headquartered in his ‘ 21 ‘ Club and served as its first President . Among the long list of luminaries associated with the ‘ 21 ‘ Club and IRON GATE , General Jimmy Doolittle was a frequent guest. Jonna Doolittle Hoppes continues her family’s  traditional support of the  Air Force and IRON GATE . Accordingly , the Board of Directors of IRON GATE has bestowed the title of “ HONORARY LIFE MEMBER “  for  Jonna . She will be distinguished as the first such nominee of this IRON GATE  “ ROLL of HONOR “ .  Following  Jonna’s selection , Brig. Gen. Blaine D. Holt , Ret.  has also been  nominated and accepted to our “ ROLL of HONOR “ in recognition of his distinguished Air Force career and dedicated support of IRON GATE and all things AIR FORCE – a true patriot.

Our own Pamela Freytag , Board of Director / Member At Large has been nominated as Co-Chair , IRON GATE  Board of Advisors and will share this duty with Co-Chair nominee Bruce Whitman. We will rely on their expertise to provide important guidance to our IRON GATE Board in the arena  of  public issues and national affairs as they pertain to the United States Air Force and national defense.  No stranger to IRON GATE , Pamela continues to provide our Board with the wisdom she gained as longtime IRON GATE member and wife of distinguished late IRON GATE executive Gen. Richard Freytag. Pamela’s Co-Chair, Bruce Whitman has served the cause of aerospace and national defense in a distinguished career spanning several decades , receiving , in the last two years, the SERVICE TO THE NATION AWARD, one of the highest honors of the   Soldiers’ , Sailors’,  Marines’ ,  Coast Guard, and  Airmens’  Foundation and the EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE AWARD by the Air Force Association. Bruce currently serves as Chairman Emeritus / Co- Chair of the Executive Committee of the CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR FOUNDATION which recently honored him with a DYNAMIC LEADERSHIP AWARD. Bruce  currently serves as Chairman , President, CEO of Flight Safety International Corporation.

The Board of Directors of IRON GATE , in a continuing effort to re-constitute our leadership with a core of highly qualified officers has enlisted veteran IRON GATE member Richard Caime to also serve on our Board in an advisory capacity and will, from time to time, issue reports commenting on current topical aerospace and defense issues. Dick recently attended AFA National Convention in Orlando representing IRON GATE and reported on the highlights of those deliberations – soon to be published on our website. Dick has a long distinguished career ( recently highlighted on our website ) that includes strike missile development , Director Navigation Systems /F-16 Program ,  F-111 Electronics Program Director , Polaris Submarine Navigation Systems Management , Nike Zeus Radar Engineering  and has served on multinational panels including a guest presentation at THE HAGUE.

In the role of Co-Vice Chair of the NYSSA / Veterans Round table I have joined in  efforts to support development of programs for Veterans transitioning to Wall Street and have  participated in events at NASDAQ , involving  Bloomberg News and which have been featured on the  NASDAQ   “ JUMBOTRON “ in Times Square promoting our efforts. Our goal is to become a forum to the disparate number of veteran support groups and help focus these efforts , as  an  arms-length  promoter utilizing the existing infrastructure of the non-profit  New  York  Society  of   Security Analysts,    Est. 1934  /  9000   CFA  membership  and  the  parent  CFA  Institute  –  100,000  worldwide  membership.  In addition,  the  NYSSA/ Veterans Roundtable is working to promote understanding of Air Force / national defense issues through active dialogue.
