CFA Society New York Brings its Membership Up Close to Top Air Force General

A joint effort by the Iron Gate Chapter of the Air Force Association and the Veterans Roundtable of the CFA Society New York (“CFANY”) brought General David Goldfein, Chief of Staff of the Air Force, to New York City for a very special meeting of the investment industry professionals with the U.S. Air Force in May 2017.

With a $166 billion budget under his command, General Goldfein, the highest-ranking member of the Air Force, shared his insights into how an increased commitment to defense spending by the White House could impact defense contractors, as well as both the domestic and global economy at large. The event was conceived by CFANY’s Veterans Roundtable, a special interest group established in 2015 to assist veterans transitioning to careers in finance by fostering points of connectivity between veteran initiatives across Wall Street, current military service members, and the financial community at large.

Lance Widner, CFA, Chair of the Veterans Roundtable, stated that “Our team had a connection with the Air Force Public Affairs Office in New York City. When we learned of the Chief of Staff’s visit from Washington, D.C., we saw a perfect opportunity to invite the General to share his knowledge from the very highest levels of the Pentagon at a time when more eyes than ever are looking at how our government spends taxpayer dollars. As part of the Air Force’s increasing interest in public outreach, General Goldfein and his staff saw the value in the opportunity. Our group, as well as CFANY, were thrilled to deliver this special event.”

Founded in 2015 by Lance and his two co-chairs, Anthony Cipriano, D.M.D. (current President of the Iron Gate Chapter of AFA), and Matthew Noll, CFA, the Veterans Roundtable represents the CFA Institute and the CFANY as a natural intersection between military service and the finance industry. This includes a commitment to seeking opportunities for providing the technical development and networking opportunities to create a “transition portal” from a military career to finance, as well as creating a platform for speakers with a military background to speak about topics related to finance and budgeting.

The Veterans Roundtable has hosted various events since that time, including an annual Veterans Transition Symposium, which features service members who have successfully transitioned from military service to a career in finance, a Veteran Transition Boot Camp, a venture capital panel comprised of entrepreneurs in the commercial space industry and a former astronaut, and most recently, General Goldfein. The Veterans Roundtable has also published two articles in the globally distributed CFA Magazine.

As a result of these efforts, and in conjunction with the celebration of CFANY’s 80th birthday, the Veterans Roundtable is going to be formally recognized at the Annual Dinner on Thursday, October 3, 2017 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in NYC for its contribution to CFANY and its parent organization, the 140,000+ member CFA Institute. The Veterans Roundtable will be recognized alongside Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Richards, who will be receiving a Humanitarian Award for their generous $1 million gift to veteran education through their Veterans Education Challenge program.
